Lock Products

  • How should I clean my hardware?

For the majority of our finishes we suggest:

    • Use warm, soapy water and then towel-dry the hardware.
    • Spray rubbing alcohol on the hardware and allow the hardware to air-dry.

For our living finishes (those intended to age over time due to the natural oils on your hands), we suggest:

    • Spray rubbing alcohol on the hardware and allow the hardware to air-dry.

  • Where can I find information about Images products?

As of December 5th, 2011, Baldwin decided to combine the Images and Estate portfolios together to bring customers a consolidated line consisting of the best performing products.

Several Images knobs and levers have been structurally upgraded and assigned new Estate model numbers and some products have been discontinued. Learn more about the Estate portfolio.

Discontinued products and all supporting technical documents will remain on the website and can be found through the Search feature.

  • What are the differences between Baldwin Images and Baldwin Prestige?

The traditional Baldwin product, Images provides the discriminating showroom customers the broadest style, finish, and function offering within the decorative hardware industry. Baldwin Prestige, a newer line to the Baldwin brand, was designed and developed to exceed the expectations of the big-box retail customer. While the traditional Images  Baldwin product leverages a diamond shaped broach on both tubular and mortise mechanics, the Baldwin Prestige product leverages a tubular only chassis with a half round design meant to be easier to install for the do-it-yourself consumer. Solid forged brass material is used throughout the traditional Baldwin line of entrance sets, knobs, levers, and deadbolts; Baldwin Prestige uses solid forged brass for the entrance sets and other solid material for knobs and levers. Both the traditional and Prestige lines offer a limited lifetime mechanical warranty. Traditional Baldwin product features the C-Keyway pin and tumbler entry technology along with the classic Baldwin key bow shape that customers have recognized for over 60 years. Unlike the Baldwin traditional product, Baldwin Prestige features SmartKey® Re-key Technology, which allows consumers to re-key their lock themselves.

Finish & Material

  • What are Baldwin Prestige products made of?

Baldwin Prestige is made of solid construction knobs, levers, deadbolts, and handlesets and offers both a limited lifetime mechanical and finish warranty. The handlesets are constructed of solid forged brass, where as the knobs and levers are manufactured with a casted zinc material.

  • What is Proposition 65?

Proposition 65 requires businesses to notify Californians about certain conservative levels of chemicals in the products they purchase, in their homes or workplaces, or that are released into the environment. Baldwin is a global supplier of hardware and therefore must put the warning in all applicable products in order to be sure of complying with the stringent California law. Only certain Baldwin living finish products or products containing lead crystal are required to carry the notice. Baldwin believes that the risk of exposure to a hazardous chemical while using the affected products is very low, but has included a warning in our living finish and lead crystal products in order to assure compliance with California law. For more information about Proposition 65 please visit the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment website:

  • I noticed that some products are brass and some stainless steel, which is more durable? Will Baldwin Stainless product rust?

Baldwin offers a variety of products in both solid forged brass and solid stainless steel. Neither material is more durable than the other. Baldwin revolutionized the industry by forging brass into decorative hardware. Most brass designs are offered in over 15 finishes, where the stainless products are limited to two. Baldwin uses 304 Grade Stainless on all its Stainless Steel products including levers, knobs, and roses. Stainless products are noted with an ‘S’ after the style number. While there are a few products that are offered with either a brass or steel substrate, most styles are exclusive to one or the other. Depending on your style and finish preference, the material your product is constructed of may differ.

  • How can I enhance the oil-rubbed bronze finish on my hardware?

Occasionally apply light machine oil to deepen the color and sheen of the untouched portions of the product. Coat the metal parts with oil and let it stand for a few minutes, then gently rub off the excess with a clean cloth. Never use abrasives, ammonia, or other harsh chemicals to clean your products.

  • Why is the finish on the product I purchased different from the finish on the displays I saw at the store?

There are a variety of reasons why finishes vary between what is on display and what is received. If you selected a product that includes hand-relieving, variances in luster, hue and appearance are the result of the final stages of the finish development which are handcrafted and will vary. Some finishes are considered to be ‘living’. These special living finishes were developed with the intent to change color over time when the product is handled or exposed to the elements. While hand-relieved does not impact the warranty of the product, living finishes are not covered within the finish warranty.

Operation & Functionality

  • My front door is currently drilled for a tubular handleset with 6” between the handle grip and deadbolt. Can I install any of the tubular ¾ or full escutcheon handlesets designs? What about emergency-exit handlesets?

No. All Baldwin ¾ and full escutcheon handlesets are designed to accommodate a 5-1/2” center-to-center spacing between the handle grip and the deadbolt. If your door is drilled to a dimension other than 5-1/2”, we recommend you use either a sectional handleset or deadbolt with the knob or lever of your choice. All Baldwin emergency-exit handleset designs use a large one-piece escutcheon on the interior which requires a 5-1/2" center-to-center spacing.

  • My door is bored for a tubular 2-3/4" backset latch. Will Baldwin latches fit this backset?

Yes. Baldwin Prestige product utilizes an adjustable backset latch that accommodates both a 2-3/8" or 2-3/4" backset preparation. For Images & Estate products, tubular handlesets and keyed entry sets are supplied with an adjustable backset latch designed to fit either a 2-3/8" or 2-3/4" backset. Tubular interior passage and privacy sets utilize a fixed backset latch; although they are not adjustable you can order your product with the correct backset for your application. If you have purchased product and find that you need a different backset latch, please call our Baldwin Consumer Services Department toll-free at 1-800-566-1986.

  • What door thickness will the Baldwin Prestige product support?

Out of the package, Baldwin Prestige handlesets support doors that are 1-3/4 inches thick and thick door kits can be requested to support doors up to 2 inches. Knobs, levers, and deadbolts support doors that range between 1-3/8 inches to 1-3/4 inches.

  • Why doesn’t the interior turn piece on my Baldwin Prestige keyed knob/lever rotate when I take it out of the package?

Baldwin Prestige product is packaged in a way that it makes it easy to unpack and install on the door. The knobs and levers are not pre-installed on the chassis so that the installer will have easy access to the screw holes that mount the product to the door. The set screw that will hold the knob or lever is in a retracted position to accept the trim during installation; as a result, the set screw prevents the turn piece from rotating. Once the knob or lever is installed and the set screw is tightened with the provided Allen wrench, the turn piece will rotate to operate the cylinder. Please note: the set screw in the retracted position also limits the ability to re-key prior to installation.

  • Does Baldwin Prestige have any dummy/inactive handlesets or double cylinder deadbolt handlesets?

Yes. Dummy/inactive handlesets are most commonly used on double entry doors. Double cylinder handlesets require key operation on both sides of the door. For either of these alternative functions, you will need to purchase a functioning single cylinder handleset and use a conversion kit to change to either a dummy/inactive or a double cylinder function.

  • Will anyone be able to re-key my Baldwin Prestige lock if they have the re-keying tool?

No. To be able to re-key a lock that features SmartKey technology, the functioning key that currently operates the lock will also be required.

  • Why is my traditional Baldwin key not compatible with my Baldwin Prestige lock?

Unlike the Baldwin traditional product, Baldwin Prestige features SmartKey® Re-key Technology, which allows consumers to re-key their lock themselves in seconds. This technology utilizes a KW1 keyway, which is not compatible with the Traditional Baldwin C-Keyway pin and tumbler design.

  • Can my Baldwin lock be keyed to the same key combination as other non-Baldwin locks in my home?

It depends on which other manufactures products you have in your home. The shape of key blades is not universal to all lock manufactures. Baldwin Images & Estate locks utilize what is called a C-keyway. Baldwin Prestige utilizes a K-keyway design with SmartKey® Re-key Technology. To determine if your non-Baldwin lock uses a C-keyway, a K-keyway, or other try inserting the Baldwin key into your existing lock. If your key can be inserted all the way into the non-Baldwin lock, it can likely be re-keyed to operate with your Baldwin key.

  • How do I tell if my door is a reverse bevel?

Knowing the bevel of the door is required for certain Images & Estate products including Estate mortise locks. Similar to identifying the handing of a door, the bevel is simple to identify. Facing the door from the outside of the room or home, operate the door. If the door swings toward you, it is considered a reverse bevel.

  • How do I determine if I need to buy a right-hand or left-hand lever for my door?

Handing is required for Baldwin Prestige dummy levers, as well as Images & Estate mortise locks, keyed entry levers, and handlesets with a lever interior style. Determining the handing of a door is simple; facing the door from the outside of the room or home, locate the location of the door hinges. If the hinges are on the right, it is a right-hand door. If the hinges are on the left, it is a left-hand door.

  • Does Baldwin make drive-in latches?

Yes. Through customer service, Baldwin Prestige latches can be ordered for a drive-in operation.

  • What Baldwin products meet the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards?

All passage function lever designs comply with ANSI-A117.1 and The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA). Images & Estate privacy function lever designs, commonly used for bedrooms and bathrooms, also comply with the ADA regulations.

Sales & Distribution

  • Does Baldwin have a MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) policy?

Yes. In order to protect our brand from devaluation by excessive promotion of discount levels and to help preserve the integrity of our dealer network, Baldwin products are covered by a Minimum Advertised Price (MAP) policy. Dealers should contact your Baldwin Sales Representative or Baldwin Customer Service for full details of the Baldwin MAP policy.

  • I was looking at my local Home Depot and Lowes for Baldwin Prestige product, but cannot find it. How can I purchase the product if it is not in my stores?

Baldwin Prestige is limited to select Home Depot or Lowes locations. Both retailers offer the product through special order or on their website.

Archetypes Discontinuance

  • I have questions. Who can I talk to in order to learn more information?

You can call Baldwin Consumer & Technical Service at 800-566-1986 or your local Baldwin Sales Representative.

  • I have Archetypes products on my home, is my lock still under warranty?

The mechanical warranty offered on Archetypes products will be honored under the Baldwin Archetypes Limited Warranty policy. No finish warranty is offered on Baldwin Archetypes products, because they are living finishes which are designed to age and improve over time.

  • Will I be able to order Archetypes products after they have been discontinued?

Orders received after August 31, 2012 will be processed with available inventory on a first come, first served basis until inventory is depleted.

  • When was Archetypes discontinued?

    August 31, 2012

Maximum voltage rating is 16 volts DC.
